GODWIN
Chartered in 1905, Godwin is one of Cumberland County's smallest communities, with a population of just over 100 residents. Named for Isaac William Godwin, the area's first settler, the town's history is closely tied to the railroad that helped connect this rural community to the outside world. In 1878, Godwin persuaded the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad to build a station near his home, creating a vital link for local residents and businesses. Although the depot was removed around the time of World War II, its influence remains an important part of the town's story.
Today, Godwin offers visitors a glimpse of small-town North Carolina at its most authentic. Surrounded by farmland and open countryside, this quiet community is known for its peaceful atmosphere, rich history, and welcoming spirit. Its small population and rural setting create a sense of charm and simplicity that reflects the enduring character of Cumberland County's countryside.
