Special Events Mark the Birthday of the Civil Rights Leader

Fayetteville, NC - As a leader in the Civil Rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. peacefully brought about changes that led to greater equality for all Americans. On the third Monday in January, the United States celebrates a holiday commemorating Dr. King. From January 17th through January 22nd, Cumberland County organizations also honor Dr. King.  

January 17th at 5:00 p.m./Dr. Edward Jackson Lecture - Fayetteville State University (FSU) is hosting Dr. Edward Jackson, the Executive Architect for the National Memorial Project Foundation. Dr. Jackson will discuss his experience as an architect as it relates to art and his role with the National Memorial Project Foundation for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.  The talk will be held at the Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center on Maiden Lane. January 17th at 9:00 a.m./Spring Lake Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast - Join the Spring Lake Ministerial Alliance at this special event, honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The prayer breakfast will include a buffet-style breakfast with beverages and will feature guest speaker Pastor Christopher Stackhouse Sr., Senior Pastor of Lewis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.  More Information: 910-916-9971.

January 18th at 12:00 p.m./Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade - Join in the celebration of Dr. King’s life at this annual downtown parade. Parade route runs from Person Street to Hay Street and ends on Winslow Avenue.

January 19th at 5:00 p.m./Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Worship Service - At Covenant Love Church, the Fayetteville/Cumberland County Ministerial Council invites you to join them at the 27th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Worship Service. The keynote speaker is Apostle Anthony Buie, Pastor of St. Joseph Miracle Revival Center in Red Springs, NC, and the hosting pastor is Pastor Al Brice, Senior Pastor of Covenant Love Church. January 20th at 8:00 a.m./ 27th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast - The theme for Cumberland County Ministerial Council’s annual Commemoration of Dr. King’s life at the Crown Expo Center is “Seize the Moment: A New Season.” Keynote speaker is Dr. Bishop Kenneth Monroe of Eastern North Carolina District A.M.E. January 20th at 7:00 p.m./“A Change Gonna Come” – A Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Concert -  The FSU  Concert Choir performs a special concert in celebration of the life of Dr. King. The concert will be held at Seabrook Auditorium on the FSU campus.  More Information: 910-672-1724.

January 22nd at 11:30 a.m./Fort Bragg’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Commemoration - Join the Fort Bragg community in honoring Dr. King’s life and service during this annual event. The ceremony will be held at the Iron Mike Conference Center on Fort Bragg. More Information: 910-396-5167.

After attending one of these special events, consider visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. Park. The park, located on Blue Street, holds a monument of Dr. King that bears quotes from speeches throughout his career. The park is one of the 22 sites on the community’s African American Cultural Heritage trail. Follow this link to view the entire trail.
