Organizations band together to recognize the 20th Anniversary of 9/11/2001
Fayetteville, NC – From Sept. 9 - 11, events in Fayetteville will recognize the 20th anniversary of the terror attacks.
“Through Fayetteville’s relationship with Fort Bragg, the community has a unique perspective on the impacts of 9/11/2001,” says Cape Fear Regional Theater (CFRT) Artistic Director Mary Kate Burke. “We invite the community to come together and remember, reflect, and ultimately celebrate the triumph of the American spirit.”
Weekend events include:
Thu. Sept. 9 – Distinguished Speaker Series with David Zucchino, New York Times contributing writer and recipient of two Pulitzer Prize awards. This talk will be held at 6 pm at the U.S. Army Airborne & Special Operations Museum in the Yarborough Bank Theater. This event is free for members and active-duty military, a $10 fee will be collected for members of the public.
David Zucchino, a Fayetteville native and Terry Sanford High School graduate, is a contributing writer for The New York Times. He has been reporting regularly from Afghanistan for 20 years and will focus his discussion on coverage there. He is also the author of the book “Thunder Run”, which is about the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Zucchino was recently awarded a Pulitzer Prize this year for his book, “Wilmington’s Lie: The Murderous Coup of 1898 and the Rise of White Supremacy”. He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1989 for his reporting from South Africa. He’s a four-time Pulitzer Prize finalist for coverage of Lebanon, Africa, inner-city Philadelphia, and Iraq. He has reported from more than three dozen countries, most recently from Afghanistan.
Sat. Sept. 11 - Field of Honor® Opening Ceremony. The ceremony starts at 8 am on the Parade Field of the U.S. Army & Special Operations Museum.
Each flag in the Field of Honor comes with its own story and displays a tag identifying both the person who sponsored the flag and the flag honoree. This living display of heroism flies as a patriotic tribute to the strength and unity of Americans, and honors all who are currently serving, those that have served, and the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation’s security and freedom.
After the opening ceremony, individuals who purchased Field of Honor flags will be allowed to ring Fayetteville's Unity Bell in honor or memory of their loved one.
Sat. Sept. 11 – Where Were You? This free event starts at 7:30 pm in Festival Park in Downtown Fayetteville.
“Where Were You?” a collaboration between local organizations and Fort Bragg, will feature live performances from CFRT, the Fayetteville Symphony, the 82nd Airborne All American Chorus, Cumberland Choral Arts, and others. “Where Were You?” will honor this important moment in American history.
Sat. Sept. 11 –Temporary Exhibit featuring World Trade Center beam and stone from the Pentagon. This special presentation will be placed in the main atrium of the U.S. Army Airborne & Special Operations Museum. The free exhibit is available for viewing during regular museum hours.
Sat. Sept 11 – 3rd Annual Fayetteville 9/11 Stair Climb. Segra Stadium hosts the climb, which starts at 8:47 am. The cost to climb is $30. Proceeds will benefit programs provided by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to support families of local fallen firefighters and the Fire Department of New York Counseling Services Unit.
The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a way to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters, police, and EMS who selflessly gave their lives on that tragic day. Each participant will pay tribute to those brave souls by climbing the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Each individual tribute not only remembers the sacrifice but symbolically completes their heroic journey to save others. For more information, click HERE.
