Cumberland County, NC – As home of Fort Liberty, our sports facilities have been tested by the world’s toughest. From soccer to baseball, skeet shooting to wrestling, our excellent venues and highly trained staff are ready to serve. Here are 5 top reasons tournament planners choose Cumberland County:

1. Facilities
Soccer, cheerleading, basketball, boxing, gymnastics, wrestling, fishing, skeet, baseball, golf and other sports tournaments will find a facility to suit their needs in Cumberland County. The latest addition to our portfolio, Segra Stadium, opened in downtown Fayetteville in April. The stadium, home to the MLB Houston Astros’ minor league team, the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, can be used for other events and tournaments outside of game days. NCAA Division 1 Big South Baseball Championship, an ESPN-televised event, held the first tournament of its three-year contract at Segra in May.

“I would also extend the individual salutes to one outside the team, but as instrumental as anyone in making the tournament work: Stephanie Decatur with the Fayetteville Area CVB,” said Mark Bryant, Director of Broadcast Services & Development, Big South Conference. “She got our teams situated with hotels, she solved problems I brought to her attention and even solved problems before they existed. Outstanding work, and hugely appreciated.”

2. Access to Fort Liberty

Fort Liberty, one of the largest military installations in the United States, boasts a variety of world-class facilities for tournaments. Of note, the Fort Liberty Clay Target Center hosts a range of special events throughout the year. Later this month, they are hosting the 2019 Junior World Skeet Championships. Additionally, with 13 freshwater lakes, Fort Liberty is an ideal location for fishing tournaments.

“We want to personally thank the bureau to support the Junior World Skeet Championship, held in July 2014. When we started planning, we had no idea how to address some areas. “said Jim and Belinda Tiner, Tournament Directors. “Our job of planning the event was made easier with the help of the bureau’s staff.”

3. Bureau Assistance from Start to Finish

The Fayetteville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau stands ready to make your event a success. Sports Sales Manager Amy Karpinski is your enthusiastic and connected point of contact to coordinate or secure:

  • Proposals and site selection visits
  • Connect and assist with venue selection
  • Public relations support
  • Attendance-building information
  • Support staff and registration personnel
  • Secure local dignitaries welcome

“When I need help, when I need customer service, when I need support, I make one call – to the Fayetteville area Convention & Visitors Bureau!” says Mike Anderson, Travel Director, Top Gun Sports. “They are the sports tourism pro that guides me to their hospitality partners to allow me to maximize my time and services that I ultimately take to our families/teams.”

4. Prime Location

Cumberland County is centrally located halfway between New York and Florida and is in the center of the east coast of North Carolina, located just off I-95. Fayetteville Regional Airport welcomes 16 flights a day from Charlotte and Atlanta. An hour away, Raleigh-Durham International Airport sees arrivals from around the United States.

“The bureau’s understanding of the youth sports market and the key decision makers has accelerated the planning and development process to get us on the way to creating a top event in a new location,” said Matthew Libber, Elite Tournaments.

5. Big-City Amenities, Small-Town Prices

With world-class sports facilities, 600+ restaurants, 70+ hotels and plenty of free or inexpensive activities, Cumberland County boasts the amenities of a bigger city. The best part? Your dollar will stretch further here than in larger cities.
