Fayetteville, NC –International touring spoken-word poet Giddy Perez is the featured artist at the January 6 Marquis Slam in Fayetteville. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, and currently residing in Tampa, Florida, Perez has numerous accolades including ranking 10th in the world at the World International Poetry Slam and twice placing 2nd with her team at the Southern Fried Poetry Slam, the 2nd largest poetry slam in the United States.

Perez opens the January 6th show, and a poetry slam immediately follows. A poetry slam is a competition where poets read/recite original work.  These performances are judged by members of the audience. After three elimination rounds, the poet with the highest score wins money and the opportunity to compete for a spot on the Marquis Slam team.  The Marquis Slam follows Poetry Slam, Inc. rules and regulations.

Last August, the Marquis Slam team competed in the National Poetry Slam against 80 teams from the United States, Canada and Australia. The team made it to the semi-finals and ranked 18th,  making them the highest-ranking slam team in the state of North Carolina.

The Marquis Slam is held the first Saturday of every month at the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County.  Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door or $8 in advance.  For more information on the Marquis Slam, please call Eean Tyson at 334-332-5598 or email ourplacenpo@gmail.com
