po·et·ry  /ˈpōətrē/  noun

  1. literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; poems collectively or as a genre of literature.

That is the proper definition of Poetry, but much like most creative spaces, it doesn’t fit neatly into one box, lane, or style. It’s an expansive place of connection, bravery, and vulnerability. It’s gentle, bold, and soul-baring. It’s not for the weak at heart; warriors live here.

Society has conditioned us that feelings, emotions and vulnerability are a sign of weakness. That’s a lie. It’s a lie we have told over and over, we’ve doubled down, and circled back, reinforcing this narrative that has truly done more harm than good. Understanding ourselves, effectively communicating our feelings and empathy is the way out.

Poets are the truth, to stand alone, on a stage, with no instrument, no backing vocals, no band behind you. Just YOU and your truth, it doesn’t get more real than that.

Detour Slam Team

Fayetteville for many, many years has had a thriving poetry and spoken word scene. COVID may have put a pause in place for a time, but it is back in full force now and better than ever. Southern Fried Poetry Slam, one of the most notable Poetry Slam competitions in the country, was held right here in Fayetteville in 2019.

Detour Slam Team is Fayetteville's hometown team. They are currently ranked 4th in the NATION. To make the team, 12 poets go head-to-head for the coveted 5 slots. 5 random judges select the 5 poets that create the team that will perform as a collective. They work for almost an entire year to write, bond, and perfect their pieces. That level of dedication and devotion speaks volumes about the heart of the poets who compete.

Fayetteville has such an amazing mix of poetry, spoken word, and creative fusion events that happen on a regular monthly basis.
